The Circuit really took off in the late 80s and early 90s. The Circuit was LA, NY, Miami, Atlanta, New Orleans and Palm Springs. International events were held in Montreal (Black and Blue) and Sydney (Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras). Europe came later. In addition, the big parties were held at the March on Washington and Stonewall 25.

At the beginning these were not for-profit ventures. Promoters made money on the parties but now they basically run the show as a business.

The Morning Party, Labor Day LA, the Miami White Party and others were almost uniquely fundraisers for AIDS-related causes.

The Circuit was important because it gave people an outlet in the worst days of the AIDS crisis. It was escapism, meeting likeminded men from around the country. The toned bodies were partially in response to the crisis; people wanted to counter the wasting associated with AIDS. Bodies were not nearly as worked out beforehand.

Another huge difference was in the drugs. In the early days of the circuit, MDMA or whatever you want to call it, was the drug of choice. The parties consisted of a lot of hugging and were free-flowing. Lots of house music.

Meth changed everything, at the same time the parties became for-profit and imitations of what came before.

As AIDS moved to a chronic condition and then to a preventable disease, it became much more about sex. There really wasn't the same kind of shared purpose or fundraising. The whole vibe changed.

So I understand that the parties are still a form of escapism but they have become far more tribal and Grindr has changed the game even more. No need to pick someone up on the dancefloor when you can just use an app.

The Circuit isn't really the Circuit anymore. It was tremendous fun while it lasted. There was nothing like it, and it wasn't reasonable to think it would last.

I like to think that today's parties are still about forging community and connection but I'm afraid that men think they are participating in a rich tradition which has long since passed.

I may be old, but I am so fucking happy to have attended many of those original events where I met my husband and forged some of my closest friendships.

But there really was a time when the travel and the parties and the outfits kept people sane.
